There’s a weird myth floating around the internet that everyone secretly wants to work alone in sweatpants forever.
It makes for great Twitter content.
It doesn’t match reality.
As we scale the ClickMint team here in Malibu — where the ocean is distracting and the coffee is overpriced — we’ve been thinking a lot about what hybrid work actually means.
Not in a “HR handbook” way.
In a real way.
Because scaling a company isn’t just about revenue. It’s about energy. And energy is hard to manufacture over Slack.
Remote work is incredible.
No commute.
Deep focus blocks.
Control over your environment.
But here’s the part people don’t post about:
After a while, working alone in your apartment starts to feel… small.
You can crush your tasks.
Hit your KPIs.
Optimize your Notion board into oblivion.
And still feel disconnected.
Humans are social mammals. We evolved in tribes, not in one-bedroom WeWork phone booths.
A lot of people don’t actually want to be alone all day. They just don’t want to sit in traffic for two hours to prove they exist.
Those are different things.
Hybrid done badly feels chaotic.
Hybrid done intentionally feels powerful.

A lot of younger professionals were sold a dream of “work from anywhere.”
And yes, flexibility is non-negotiable.

Gen Z cares about:

You absorb it by proximity.
You overhear how leaders think.
You see how problems get solved in real time.
You watch how hard conversations are handled.
That stuff doesn’t transmit well over Slack threads.
Location isn’t just aesthetic. It shapes behavior.
Malibu forces perspective.
You can’t take yourself too seriously when there’s a surfer carrying a board past your “urgent strategy meeting.”
Sunlight changes mood.
Walking meetings change tone.
Ocean air weirdly improves brainstorms.
When people want to come in — not because they’re required to, but because the environment is energizing — culture becomes magnetic instead of mandatory.
And that matters when you’re trying to attract high-agency talent.
Let’s be clear.
Hybrid doesn’t mean loose.
It doesn’t mean vibes over velocity.
It means clarity + autonomy + connection.
The bar is high. Ownership is real. Outcomes matter.
But humans perform better when they:
A purely remote culture can absolutely work. Many do.
But for teams scaling aggressively — building product, iterating funnels, launching experiments weekly — physical proximity accelerates feedback loops in ways most people underestimate.
Speed compounds. So does culture.
The goal isn’t forcing people into an office.
